Be Careful in the Crestline Mountain Area This Week

Monday, October 13, 2008 22:22

Due to the strong Santa Ana winds blowing through the mountain region this week, the National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for Crestline and its surrounding areas.

Winds are expected to average 15-25mph during the daytime, with gusts up to 45-50mph through the passes and canyons.

This, combined with low humidity and warm temperatures, means the area has the potential for severe fire weather conditions, hence the Red Flag Warning for this week.

In addition to the wind and fire warnings, visitors driving through the San Bernardino National Forest should be aware of several road repair projects that are ongoing at the current time.

According to officials, these projects are taking place at:

  • Dark Canyon Road near Idyllwild
  • Miller Canyon Road near Lake Silverwood
  • Splinter’s Cabin Road near Lake Arrowhead
  • Upper Lytle Creek Divide Road near Lone Pine Canyon

Forest Visitors are encouraged to call ahead to the local Ranger Station to check on road closures and detour routes.

  • Cajon Ranger Station 909-382-2850
  • Arrowhead Ranger Station 909-382-2758
  • Big Bear Ranger Station & Discovery Center 909-382-2790
  • Cajon Ranger Station 909-382-2850
  • Idyllwild Ranger Station 909-382-2922
  • San Gorgonio Ranger Station 909-382-2881

If you are driving around Crestline and its mountain neighbors, please be aware of the strong wind gusts when out and about. Make sure if you are camping in the mountains, that all fires are put out completely. It only takes one spark, especially in these dry, windy conditions to start a huge blaze.

Take all precautions necessary to make sure you aren’t caught unawares by the conditions and please stay safe out there.
