Crestline in the Mists
Tuesday, April 8, 2008 14:43Crestline has some great weather if you like sunshine. It’s also a great place to live if you like variety. We have these really REALLY thick mists the roll through the pass and sit in our “bowl” - sometimes for days.
I have lived in Seattle and really, have never seen mist like this. Some days I wake up to bright sunshine…and then POOF…the mist rolls in and obscures all views in a matter of 20 minutes. You can actually see the mist moving, curling around the trees and settling on the roads.

The mist today is so thick that a the view out our windows shows a complete whiteout. Driving down the hill to San Bernardino, or even driving to Arrowhead via the Rim of the World Highway is actually hazardous. You just can’t see anything. Not the curves in the road. Not the cars coming at you, until they are right there in your face.
So we all tend to take things a little more easy on those days and try not to drive anywhere. It’s an interesting facet of mountain living.

I actually enjoy driving in the mists, for a little while. One night when I was coming home from a meeting in LA the mist/fog started just as I began driving up I-18. It was so thick that I couldn’t go more than 10mph up the hill. Visibility was down to about 40″. And on a few, brief, moments the mist became so thick that I couldn’t see the front of my car.
